Sailing, ferries, golf, sea lions, pelicans, 80 degrees farenheight.....

Today I spent about 4 hours on the San Diego Bay.  It was a sunny day about 80 degrees Fahrenheit, light winds and pretty good visibility.

The San Diego harbor was filled with different types of activities ranging from a guy in a horseshoe shaped inner tube with fins as his power source to a large cigarette boat.

As we sailed south from Harbor island in the Harbor we passed Navy Aircraft carriers, including the Midway museum and the Holland Cruise ship.
As well as a pirate ship themed boat ride with pirates sword fighting aboard and pirate themed music playing, I think...

To the south there was a view of the Coronado bridge leading to Coronado that I have written about in my earlier posts.  There was also a view of Tijuana's hills with sprawling housing dotting the landscape.

There is a really cool ferry you can take from San Diego Harbor over to Coronado and it only cost's about $3 each way, not bad, and it's a fun way to go over to Coronado.

I think it would be fun to take the Ferry over to Coronado, play a round of golf, eat a meal at a nice grubbery and catch the ferry back to San Diego.

But to get back to sailing....   The quietness on the water is quite relaxing and like today we saw some sea lions and other animals like seagulls and some type of large bird like a Pelican or something.
It was a killer day overall.  Have a great weekend wherever you are at!!

Two stories that I liked this week 1/18/13

It has been a few days since I have been on here and thought I would post some stories I saw in the news:

The first story is about Memphis Grizzlies Basketball start Kevin Durant who was known as a quiet well mannered kid when he came into the NBA has become tougher.

He has been playing more fiercely and has become a more intense competitor.  One thing that his grandma noticed was his bad language and she sent him a text scolding him about.  It's funny that his g-ma is scolding him.  Check it out, I copied and pasted the source from the bleacher report and it was written by Jesse Dorsey.  The link is at the end as well.

"Kevin Durant is one of the NBA's two best players, and he's having a career year leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to the best record in the league, yet his grandma still has a bone or two to pick with the young fella.
After a dominant 102-90 win over the Phoenix Suns, in which Durant unleashed what may well be the dunk of the year, his grandma sent him a congratulatory text to go along with a bit of usual grandmotherly finger-wagging:
First of all, I'm impressed by the nice "Sun(s)" pun. Sure, it was pretty obvious, but I don't know many grandmas who would pull that one out of their pockets, so props for that.
Not only do I find it amazing that Durant's grandma can text (mine has a hard-enough time not getting frustrated with touchscreen buttons), but it's completely hilarious and grandma-like that she would get on him about being a bit too blue on the court.
It's a funny thing to see, but it's also a reminder that no matter how many points you score in a game or how successful you are in your profession, there's always going to be an old lady ready to scold you.
If he keeps up his recent angry streak, the "KD Is Not Nice" campaign is going to gain a lot of steam.
It's probably best for Durant to listen to his grandma and tone down the language if he doesn't want to end up getting more texts."

Another interesting story that goes in a totally different direction is how "HP lost about 8.8 Billion!!!" This according to an Article written by Rebecca Greenfield.  HP plans to lay off workers from the company Autonomy that they acquired.  Wow, that is a terrible ROI!!  Here is the link and I have copy and pasted the article below as well in case the Atlantic website is blocked in China.

"Rebecca Greenfield 1,180 Views Jan 14, 2013
Well you had to see this coming, sadly: HP has decided to do a little housecleaning at Autonomy, the company it acquired that it claims led to that huge $8.8 billion loss still shaking the tech giant. Robert Youngjohns, the new head of Autonomy, describes some changes at the company in a memo obtained Monday evening by AllThingsD's Arik Hesseldahl. The note says "some work force reduction is likely," but it doesn't get much more specific than that. Hesseldahl had previously reported HP would cut fewer than 70 jobs, many of those in sales.
While some people will go, it doesn't sound like HP has plans to get rid of Autonomy, despite infighting between leadership at the main branch and the bad seed. In the memo, Youngjohns claims HP will try to put displaced people in other parts of the company, adding that the enterprise search company will bring on an additional 50 engineers as well. ""

GETTING EXERCISE "OUTSIDE" 1/12/13 1:00PM

I haven't had a gym membership for the past year and in some ways I miss it but there are alternatives that are a lot more healthy and enjoyable that you can do.

One thing that I have started doing is running trails in the City near my house or going down to the beach and running right next to the water.

I believe that the sand is a lot less forgiving than a treadmill or running on cement or asphalt on the street.

One of my favorite and invigorating times to run is during the day around noon on Saturdays.  You have the sun, the ocean waves crashing right nest to you, ocean air entering your lungs.

I went to Coronado and ran from the northern part of the beach just below the base and ran to the hotel del Coronado and then ran back up to the northern starting point.  There is a park right there and it isn't crowded.

I then did about 40 push ups and 50 crunches, and 50 flutter kicks.  I even found a small area with shade so I wouldn't get a headache from the sun.

You can find a lot of helpful equipment at the gym and it depends what your goals are but you will not find the fresh air and sunshine in the gym that you will find working out outside.

JAVA Programming Language

It will be interesting of how this whole situation plays out with Hackers using JAVA to steal peoples information. (I'm assuming that is what Hackers are doing)
I have just begun learning how to program with BASIC.  I was going to learn JAVA next....

This is very significant because it effects almost all of us since JAVA is used in the mobile industry for APPS. (This is according to my limited knowledge in this arena)

Stay tuned for more updates.  Here is the Article copy and pasted out of the Chicago Tribune:

"Homeland Security urges computer users to disable Java

Browsers using Java on all operating systems vulnerable to hackers, U.S. government says

  •  10.7K
"The U.S. Department of Homeland Security urged computer users to disable Oracle Corp's Java software, amplifying security experts' prior warnings to hundreds of millions of consumers and businesses that use it to surf the Web. Hackers have figured out how to exploit Java to install malicious software enabling them to commit crimes ranging from identity theft to making an infected computer part of an ad-hoc network of computers that can be used to attack websites.
"We are currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem," the Department of Homeland Security's Computer Emergency Readiness Team said in a posting on its website late on Thursday.
"This and previous Java vulnerabilities have been widely targeted by attackers, and new Java vulnerabilities are likely to be discovered," the agency said. "To defend against this and future Java vulnerabilities, disable Java in Web browsers."
Oracle declined to comment on the warning on Friday.
Java is a computer language that enables programmers to write software utilizing just one set of code that will run on virtually any type of computer, including ones that use Microsoft Corp's Windows, Apple Inc's OS X and Linux, an operating system widely employed by corporations.
Computer users access Java programs through modules, or plug-ins, that run Java software on top of browsers such as Internet Explorer and Firefox.
The U.S. government's warning on Java came after security experts warned earlier on Thursday of the newly discovered flaw.
It is relatively rare for government agencies to advise computer users to completely disable software due to a security bug, particularly in the case of widely used programs such as Java. They typically recommend taking steps to mitigate the risk of attack while manufacturers prepare an update, or hold off on publicizing the problem until an update is prepared.
In September, the German government advised the public to temporarily stop using Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser to give it time to patch a security vulnerability that opened it to attacks.
The Department of Homeland Security said attackers could trick targets into visiting malicious websites that would infect their PCs with software capable of exploiting the bug in Java.
It said an attacker could also infect a legitimate website by uploading malicious software that would infect machines of computer users who trust that site because they have previously visited it without experiencing any problems.
They said developers of several popular tools, known as exploit kits, which criminal hackers use to attack PCs, have added software that allows hackers to exploit the newly discovered bug in Java to attack computers.
Security experts have been scrutinizing the safety of Java since a similar security scare in August, which prompted some of them to advise using the software only on an as-needed basis.
At the time they advised businesses to only allow their workers to use Java browser plug-ins when prompted for permission by trusted programs such as GoToMeeting, a Web-based collaboration tool from Citrix Systems Inc.
Adam Gowdiak, a researcher with Polish security firm Security Explorations, subsequently said he had found other security bugs in Java that continued to make computers vulnerable to attack.
Java suffered another setback in October when Apple began removing old versions of the software from Internet browsers of Mac computers when its customers installed new versions of its OS X operating system. Apple did not provide a reason for the change and both companies declined comment at the time.

Coronado, California 1/8/13

Today I drove over the bridge from San Diego to Coronado Island.  This isn't the exact view I had but you can see that this is a beautiful place to visit or live.

When Bill Clinton was president of the United States he used to stay in a house very close to the Hotel Del Coronado a famous older hotel with a rich history in Southern California.
Coronado has a lot of small shops and restaurants  to choose from and has a theatre in the middle of town that is currently showing Les Miserable

I ran down the beach from the front of the Hotel Del and ran north up the shoreline.  This is one of my favorite beaches because you have people from all over the world and it is a quiet uncrowded beach most of the time except on the weekend.

This is a great place for couples, families with kids or someone looking to explore and walk around the beautifully groomed yards and amazing houses displaying all types of architecture.

How to beat Disney at their own game?

I was reading a book today called "NUMBERS RULE YOUR WORLD" by Kaiser Fung.  In the book he describes how annoying the lines and long wait times can be one of the most reasons patrons complained on exit questionnaire's.

He also explains the methods Disneyland uses like the Fast Pass to encourage riders to come back later and they will be assured a shorter waiting time.

Many times this is the case and the amazing thing that Disney has figured is that they can distract the riders by encouraging them to go wait in other areas of the park or eat.  They are able to convince the people that they waited less, which in fact is not the case because they waiting the same amount.

What Disney has been able to do is change the perspective of people and that is why they are such geniuses!!

He mentions a computer programmer from North Carolina that has used statistics and tailored pathways for families, singles, couples with children and some other types of situations to get to more of the rides than the average Disneyland fan would get to see.

His books plan helped a die hard Disneyland couple figure out how to ride every last attraction and everything else Disneyland had to offer in  just 13 hours.  This was written back in 2007 so there have been some more additions to rides that I am not aware of.

Here is a link to the book about figuring out how to ride more rides and see more of Disneyland then you ever would get to before.

San Diego Pro Basketball Team- San Diego Surf

I was recently looking online and found out that San Diego has a Professional Basketball team.   The San Diego Surf are part of the ABA and play at Miramar College in San Diego at the Glass Arena.

This is great for someone like myself and others that really enjoy the game of basketball but can't always make it to a Clippers or Lakers game.  And did I mention tickets are cheap! General Admission for ages 6 and up is only $10!

They are ranked #18 out of 90 teams in the ABA. They just recently got back into the top ten by winning back to back games.

Their next home games are Jan 12th and 19th.  Games are on Saturday and start at 7:30pm.

Here is a link to their homepage with more information:

Things to do this week 1/7-1/13

Well the College football season has come to an end this year and the National Championship is happening on Monday 1/7/13 with #1 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish taking on #2 Alabama Crimson Tide for the BCS title.  The Alabama Crimson tide won decisively with little resistance from the Irish.

This is a game worth watching so set some time tomorrow to get together with some friends or family and take in this highly anticipated title game.  This game was exciting if you are an Alabama fan.  If you are a Notre Dame fan you are probably embarrassed of the Irishs's performance.

Another thing to do this week is to set some time out this week to get some exercise, find an activity you like to do that you can get some exercise with.  Personally I am going to play some tennis this week.
On Tuesdays at Balboa Park here in San Diego some of the museums are free.  Check your local city and find out if there is a day when a local attraction or museum are free.  It's a great way to stimulate your mind, have fun doing something different.

Another thing I am going to check out this week is an art exhibit in Little Italy in San Diego called @2400RPM.  It goes each day this week from 12:00-6:00pm.

This sounds really interesting because the Artist Doyle Reno works with a really tough medium or materials and he creates hand reversed-sculpted cast acrylic works.  These are created at around 20,000 RPM.  I don't know much more about this but I plan on finding out more about it.  Below is a link for it:
Link for @24000RPM
If I learn of anything else incredible I will be sure to post it for you my friends.
Have a great week and carpe diem!

Lawn Bowling????? @ Balboa Park 1/5/13

Today I woke up a lot earlier than I have since being on a break from school.  I planned to meet up with my friend Sage and do some trail running @ Balboa park on the west side of the 163 freeway in San Diego.
The trails were intense and there was a staircase halfway through that we climbed with about 50 stairs.  I was pretty winded after that. We ended up running for about 1 and a half miles.

On the way back to the car we passed some people lawn bowling with what looked like croquet balls and a large shortly cut grass box about 50x50 feet in length.  I can't remember the actual measurements but nonetheless, started to talk to this guy who is a part of the club and he asked if we wanted to try this game.
He took us to this shed where he sized our hand up with the proper size lawn ball.  I used a 3 first and the size 5 felt more natural.
So Rick I believe was his name explains the rules and procedures of the game.  You can play 2-3 people and you have a skip and a lead.  One goes to the other end and sets the jack, which is a little white ball.

Then whoever won the last point sets the green mat at least 2 meters from the end of box.   You have a chalk board to keep score with.  The way to score is who has the ball closest to the jack. If you have more balls closer to the jack then you can win more points.

The difference with the balls are that they are weighted on the outside so when you roll them towards the jack you have to throw them out from the skip because they start to curve in when they lose speed. The balls are marked with a smaller circle on the inside non-weighted side and a larger circle on the weighted outside part of the ball.

Each person has 4 balls to play and each player takes a turn and.  A whole game usually consists of 8 plays.

As I said earlier the winner decides where the jack will be placed so they can decide if it is going to be a short game or a long game.  If you win and you do better at the short game then you can place it short and give yourself the advantage.

In my game today my buddy Sage won by 4 points so hats off to him.  I was holding the lead for a while but didn't keep it going.  It was still a blast.

You can play for social enjoyment, it is a lot of fun and you can talk trash if you want.  You can also play competitively and there are tournaments all over the world.

In fact by talking with one of the club members he told us that instead of golf courses on country clubs in Australia there are lawn bowling courts.  It is quite popular there and it is regularly televised on TV.

Here are some other terms I learned today from playing: line, weight, grass, skip, jack, and that physics play a big part in this game.

Life's all about trying new things.

SYNERGY DANCE ZONE 1/5/13

Tonight I went dancing at Synergy Dance Zone in San Diego.  I had been there before to dance and every time I have gone I have always enjoyed myself.  The atmosphere is friendly and the studio's claim to fame is the most friendly dance studio and the staff and owner Peter Edwards live up to that reputation.

It is quite a bargain for a night of pizza. chips, great people to dance with and an awesome music playlist.  The cost to dance the night away is $5 and for students it's only $3.  The owner whom I have known all my life is a great dancer who teaches and coaches the UCSD ballroom team and is a super cool guy that always takes the time to make you feel welcome at his studio.

Each month they showcase a specific dance and each Friday there is a dance lesson before the dance party.  This month the dance lesson is on the Waltz.  Tonight Peter taught us how to do a regular box step and incorporate a turn into it.

Throughout the night the music changes from  Waltz, Foxtrot,Tango,ChaCha, Rumba, Hustle, Night club 2 step, Salsa, Merengue and Swing.  Talk about a huge variety and their are also all levels of dancers there from beginners to pro dancers and you can dance with all of them because they are so friendly.

They also offer classes throughout the week and also have private lessons which I want to take in the future. This is the place to come if you want to dance in a classy fun cool atmosphere
I am going to make sure I make it there for each Friday night party.

If you have ever wanted to take up dancing as a hobby I would highly recommend it because it is great exercise and a lot of fun.  If you do decide you want to get serious with dancing you will want to buy some dancing shoes and you can find some good deals on amazon and ebay.
Good luck and happy dancing.

Led Zeppelin

Here is a shot of the boys from Led Zeppelin posing for a shot in a field.  The four members of this band are Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham.  I really think this is one of the best bands that has ever lived.

As I was driving from my Dr. appointment I was thinking about what type of music I was going to put on since I always drive with music on.  I hadn't listened to rock in a long time for some reason and sometimes I will listen to a genre or band so much that I will get sick of them.

I have never felt that way about Led Zepplin and so I decided I would rock out to some Led Zepplin.
I turned on their album and  rediscovered why I love this band so much.  Robert Plant's vocals are unique and mesmerizing with great range.  Jimmy page drops some awesome guitar riffs and John Bonham plays the drums in perfect synchrony with the other band members

To be honest I had never known who the lead singer of Led Zepplin was until now.  The funny thing is I just bought a Robert Plant LP.

This leads me to my point and that is this: I have noticed that there is a lot of potential for a music scene in San Diego and I hope to see it develop more within the next few years.  I want to go out and support bands that are fun to watch and put on a good show.

I will post any upcoming shows that look promising and if anybody knows of any in Southern California please feel free to leave a link or info on the comments.
Gracias

Jackie Chan fans let yourselves be known.

As many of you know I have been publishing pages or what is also called Lens's on Squidoo.  I have written on a variety of topics and activities.  I just finished  my 8th Lens and I will admit it is very addicting and gratifying.

It is really fun to do because it is supposed to be your own original material so it gives you the independence to create the information to present any way you want.  I did some research on Squidoo and found out from the blog that to increase traffic on your lens you want to focus the lens on a specific sub topic.  By narrowing further from just Jackie Chan to one of his movies  City Hunter there is a better chance of it becoming more popular due to its uniqueness.
If you want to check it out here is the link.
Enjoy,
Brad

Museum of Photography (MOPA) - 1/2/13

Today I went to the Museum of Photographic Art in Balboa Park.  Tuesday's are free for some of the museums but since today way Wednesday I paid $4 to get in since I was a student.  If you are an Adult it is normally $6.  Here is a link to upcoming activities at the Museum.

The main feature of the Museum was a Dutch artist Ruud van Empel's different photographs and styles. His whole production was called Strange Beauty and this was the first time he has showcased his work solo in an American museum.

He names all of these photographs world# and combines photography of exotic rain forests with children imposed into the different backgrounds contrasting the innocence of youth with the mysterious and dangerous rain forest. The bright colors of the rain forest distinctly contrast the very dark and very light skin of the children. The expressions on the children's faces evoke a feeling of wondering of who they are and what they are thinking. Here is a link to see a few photographs from this project. Here is another link to some of his pictures featured on display that are on ebay.

His other portraits were titled Souvenir  a project he started in 2008 with pictures of a collage of items from his life growing up.  I believe he started this project shortly after his mother died.

I then made my way over to another exhibit called the "Soapbox" where guests have spoken and MOPA created a collection of their favorite photographs.  I thought that it had a wide variety of different scenery and people from various cultures around the world. The exhibit was a buffet for the senses for sure. Comment and let me know which ones you like.
Here is a list of the main photographs I liked:

Elementary- Sherlock Holmes and Watson

Lately I have started to watch the show Elementary on CBS.  It is a new twist on the Sherlock Holmes stories with a hip Sherlock Holmes kind of like a Robert Downey Jr. type with a few tattoos and trendy clothes.  He has a thing for the ladies and in the latest episode Lucy Lu who plays Watson who is his companion.

In this Episode Leviathon is about a safe that is impregnable.  Sherlock gets a visit from a gentleman at his home who wants his help to figure out how 4 criminals were able to break into this safe in the past.  The criminals were caught  and all were put in prison but wouldn't talk.  Recently another Leviathon safe was broken into so the owner of the company believes that there must be a 5th accomplice who worked with this master heist team.

Sherlock starts to look through the crime scene for clues.  He finds out that there is only one way to get into the safe and that is though a randomly assigned number generated and sent to the key fob of the owner.  The Owner was out of the country at the time so there is no explainable way that they could have gotten through the safe.

Sherlock sits in front of the safe for hours.  Watson (Lucy Lu) shows up and he bounces some ideas off her, it is 2 am and she needs to visit her brother tomorrow but she doesn't want to stay all night but has a loyalty to him so she stays.
He destroys the digital screen of the safe with an ax, I guess out of frustration.
Sherlock gives the people Lucy Lu's phone number and she asked why he gave them her number because they are wondering who took an ax to the safe.  He says"I didn't want them to contact me". He tells her if they call, it was a necessary part of the process.

He contacts the remaining 3 criminals for a visit so he can gather information but they have refused to talk to anyone.  One of the four have died so there are only 3 left.
Sherlock gets a visit with one of the lock pickers in Sing Sing and Sherlock and Watson visit him.  Sherlock persuades him to answer how they got in.  All he has for them is an Alias name

They follow the lead and visit the house of the possible suspect. When they get there Sherlock finds a original van Gogh hidden behind a fake painting as the suspects son comes in.  He informs Sherlock that his father is innocent and there is no way he could have done any crime because he had a stroke 2 years ago and can not speak and is just immobile.
Sherlock stated that they have been put on a snipe hunt.
They continue following up on leads and the mystery continues.  Every lead they follow is leading them to a dead end.  What will be the piece for Sherlock to solve this puzzle? Watch the full episode here on CBS.

Resolutions

As I stated at the beginning post of my blog I said that I would be interviewing people from different industries I have decided to put that on hold and I don't know if I will scrap that idea all together.  My main goal for this blog for 2013 is to interest more readers to visit Every day life interest blog and contribute activities that they know about or common interests that others might share with them.

One of my goals for 2013 is to enter a fitness competition.  To do this I will have to be disciplined by eating healthy foods, avoiding poisonous foods and to exercise regularly.
I have been eating Mediterranean style meals sporadically and I have also started to trail run and run at the beach.  Here is a page on Ebay with Mediterranean cook books.
I found a fun hilly trail directly east of the San Diego Zoo next to Morley Field and the Balboa tennis club which goes on for miles and has a great view of the Coronado bridge, the San Diego skyline and on a clear day you can see the hills of Tijuana, Mexico and the Coronado Islands which are southwest of Tijuana.  These islands are in Mexico and not to be confused with Coronado Island just west of Downtown San Diego and home to the Air Naval Base.

Change of Plans

I was not able to make it to the Gareth Emery concert in Orange County on the 29th.  I was disappointed for a short minute but soon got over it because I realized that there will be many more Gareth Emery and other Dj's concerts that I can attend.
What actually happened was I waited until the last minute to decide if I was going to go and by the time I did decide all the tickets were sold out.  I did search on Craigslist in Los Angeles to see if I could find any tickets, and I did but decided San Fernando valley was too far to go for tickets.
I have been listening to a lot of his podcast's on itunes and some others like Armin van Buuren and Markus Schultz.
I will look into upcoming Trance concerts and keep an update on my blog here so that you can know what is going on.
