I haven't had a gym membership for the past year and in some ways I miss it but there are alternatives that are a lot more healthy and enjoyable that you can do.
One thing that I have started doing is running trails in the City near my house or going down to the beach and running right next to the water.
I believe that the sand is a lot less forgiving than a treadmill or running on cement or asphalt on the street.
One of my favorite and invigorating times to run is during the day around noon on Saturdays. You have the sun, the ocean waves crashing right nest to you, ocean air entering your lungs.
I went to Coronado and ran from the northern part of the beach just below the base and ran to the hotel del Coronado and then ran back up to the northern starting point. There is a park right there and it isn't crowded.
I then did about 40 push ups and 50 crunches, and 50 flutter kicks. I even found a small area with shade so I wouldn't get a headache from the sun.
You can find a lot of helpful equipment at the gym and it depends what your goals are but you will not find the fresh air and sunshine in the gym that you will find working out outside.
