Museum of Photography (MOPA) - 1/2/13

Today I went to the Museum of Photographic Art in Balboa Park.  Tuesday's are free for some of the museums but since today way Wednesday I paid $4 to get in since I was a student.  If you are an Adult it is normally $6.  Here is a link to upcoming activities at the Museum.

The main feature of the Museum was a Dutch artist Ruud van Empel's different photographs and styles. His whole production was called Strange Beauty and this was the first time he has showcased his work solo in an American museum.

He names all of these photographs world# and combines photography of exotic rain forests with children imposed into the different backgrounds contrasting the innocence of youth with the mysterious and dangerous rain forest. The bright colors of the rain forest distinctly contrast the very dark and very light skin of the children. The expressions on the children's faces evoke a feeling of wondering of who they are and what they are thinking. Here is a link to see a few photographs from this project. Here is another link to some of his pictures featured on display that are on ebay.

His other portraits were titled Souvenir  a project he started in 2008 with pictures of a collage of items from his life growing up.  I believe he started this project shortly after his mother died.

I then made my way over to another exhibit called the "Soapbox" where guests have spoken and MOPA created a collection of their favorite photographs.  I thought that it had a wide variety of different scenery and people from various cultures around the world. The exhibit was a buffet for the senses for sure. Comment and let me know which ones you like.
