Sailing, ferries, golf, sea lions, pelicans, 80 degrees farenheight.....

Today I spent about 4 hours on the San Diego Bay.  It was a sunny day about 80 degrees Fahrenheit, light winds and pretty good visibility.

The San Diego harbor was filled with different types of activities ranging from a guy in a horseshoe shaped inner tube with fins as his power source to a large cigarette boat.

As we sailed south from Harbor island in the Harbor we passed Navy Aircraft carriers, including the Midway museum and the Holland Cruise ship.
As well as a pirate ship themed boat ride with pirates sword fighting aboard and pirate themed music playing, I think...

To the south there was a view of the Coronado bridge leading to Coronado that I have written about in my earlier posts.  There was also a view of Tijuana's hills with sprawling housing dotting the landscape.

There is a really cool ferry you can take from San Diego Harbor over to Coronado and it only cost's about $3 each way, not bad, and it's a fun way to go over to Coronado.

I think it would be fun to take the Ferry over to Coronado, play a round of golf, eat a meal at a nice grubbery and catch the ferry back to San Diego.

But to get back to sailing....   The quietness on the water is quite relaxing and like today we saw some sea lions and other animals like seagulls and some type of large bird like a Pelican or something.
It was a killer day overall.  Have a great weekend wherever you are at!!

Two stories that I liked this week 1/18/13

It has been a few days since I have been on here and thought I would post some stories I saw in the news:

The first story is about Memphis Grizzlies Basketball start Kevin Durant who was known as a quiet well mannered kid when he came into the NBA has become tougher.

He has been playing more fiercely and has become a more intense competitor.  One thing that his grandma noticed was his bad language and she sent him a text scolding him about.  It's funny that his g-ma is scolding him.  Check it out, I copied and pasted the source from the bleacher report and it was written by Jesse Dorsey.  The link is at the end as well.

"Kevin Durant is one of the NBA's two best players, and he's having a career year leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to the best record in the league, yet his grandma still has a bone or two to pick with the young fella.
After a dominant 102-90 win over the Phoenix Suns, in which Durant unleashed what may well be the dunk of the year, his grandma sent him a congratulatory text to go along with a bit of usual grandmotherly finger-wagging:
First of all, I'm impressed by the nice "Sun(s)" pun. Sure, it was pretty obvious, but I don't know many grandmas who would pull that one out of their pockets, so props for that.
Not only do I find it amazing that Durant's grandma can text (mine has a hard-enough time not getting frustrated with touchscreen buttons), but it's completely hilarious and grandma-like that she would get on him about being a bit too blue on the court.
It's a funny thing to see, but it's also a reminder that no matter how many points you score in a game or how successful you are in your profession, there's always going to be an old lady ready to scold you.
If he keeps up his recent angry streak, the "KD Is Not Nice" campaign is going to gain a lot of steam.
It's probably best for Durant to listen to his grandma and tone down the language if he doesn't want to end up getting more texts."

Another interesting story that goes in a totally different direction is how "HP lost about 8.8 Billion!!!" This according to an Article written by Rebecca Greenfield.  HP plans to lay off workers from the company Autonomy that they acquired.  Wow, that is a terrible ROI!!  Here is the link and I have copy and pasted the article below as well in case the Atlantic website is blocked in China.

"Rebecca Greenfield 1,180 Views Jan 14, 2013
Well you had to see this coming, sadly: HP has decided to do a little housecleaning at Autonomy, the company it acquired that it claims led to that huge $8.8 billion loss still shaking the tech giant. Robert Youngjohns, the new head of Autonomy, describes some changes at the company in a memo obtained Monday evening by AllThingsD's Arik Hesseldahl. The note says "some work force reduction is likely," but it doesn't get much more specific than that. Hesseldahl had previously reported HP would cut fewer than 70 jobs, many of those in sales.
While some people will go, it doesn't sound like HP has plans to get rid of Autonomy, despite infighting between leadership at the main branch and the bad seed. In the memo, Youngjohns claims HP will try to put displaced people in other parts of the company, adding that the enterprise search company will bring on an additional 50 engineers as well. ""

GETTING EXERCISE "OUTSIDE" 1/12/13 1:00PM

I haven't had a gym membership for the past year and in some ways I miss it but there are alternatives that are a lot more healthy and enjoyable that you can do.

One thing that I have started doing is running trails in the City near my house or going down to the beach and running right next to the water.

I believe that the sand is a lot less forgiving than a treadmill or running on cement or asphalt on the street.

One of my favorite and invigorating times to run is during the day around noon on Saturdays.  You have the sun, the ocean waves crashing right nest to you, ocean air entering your lungs.

I went to Coronado and ran from the northern part of the beach just below the base and ran to the hotel del Coronado and then ran back up to the northern starting point.  There is a park right there and it isn't crowded.

I then did about 40 push ups and 50 crunches, and 50 flutter kicks.  I even found a small area with shade so I wouldn't get a headache from the sun.

You can find a lot of helpful equipment at the gym and it depends what your goals are but you will not find the fresh air and sunshine in the gym that you will find working out outside.

JAVA Programming Language

It will be interesting of how this whole situation plays out with Hackers using JAVA to steal peoples information. (I'm assuming that is what Hackers are doing)
I have just begun learning how to program with BASIC.  I was going to learn JAVA next....

This is very significant because it effects almost all of us since JAVA is used in the mobile industry for APPS. (This is according to my limited knowledge in this arena)

Stay tuned for more updates.  Here is the Article copy and pasted out of the Chicago Tribune:

"Homeland Security urges computer users to disable Java

Browsers using Java on all operating systems vulnerable to hackers, U.S. government says

  •  10.7K
"The U.S. Department of Homeland Security urged computer users to disable Oracle Corp's Java software, amplifying security experts' prior warnings to hundreds of millions of consumers and businesses that use it to surf the Web. Hackers have figured out how to exploit Java to install malicious software enabling them to commit crimes ranging from identity theft to making an infected computer part of an ad-hoc network of computers that can be used to attack websites.
"We are currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem," the Department of Homeland Security's Computer Emergency Readiness Team said in a posting on its website late on Thursday.
"This and previous Java vulnerabilities have been widely targeted by attackers, and new Java vulnerabilities are likely to be discovered," the agency said. "To defend against this and future Java vulnerabilities, disable Java in Web browsers."
Oracle declined to comment on the warning on Friday.
Java is a computer language that enables programmers to write software utilizing just one set of code that will run on virtually any type of computer, including ones that use Microsoft Corp's Windows, Apple Inc's OS X and Linux, an operating system widely employed by corporations.
Computer users access Java programs through modules, or plug-ins, that run Java software on top of browsers such as Internet Explorer and Firefox.
The U.S. government's warning on Java came after security experts warned earlier on Thursday of the newly discovered flaw.
It is relatively rare for government agencies to advise computer users to completely disable software due to a security bug, particularly in the case of widely used programs such as Java. They typically recommend taking steps to mitigate the risk of attack while manufacturers prepare an update, or hold off on publicizing the problem until an update is prepared.
In September, the German government advised the public to temporarily stop using Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser to give it time to patch a security vulnerability that opened it to attacks.
The Department of Homeland Security said attackers could trick targets into visiting malicious websites that would infect their PCs with software capable of exploiting the bug in Java.
It said an attacker could also infect a legitimate website by uploading malicious software that would infect machines of computer users who trust that site because they have previously visited it without experiencing any problems.
They said developers of several popular tools, known as exploit kits, which criminal hackers use to attack PCs, have added software that allows hackers to exploit the newly discovered bug in Java to attack computers.
Security experts have been scrutinizing the safety of Java since a similar security scare in August, which prompted some of them to advise using the software only on an as-needed basis.
At the time they advised businesses to only allow their workers to use Java browser plug-ins when prompted for permission by trusted programs such as GoToMeeting, a Web-based collaboration tool from Citrix Systems Inc.
Adam Gowdiak, a researcher with Polish security firm Security Explorations, subsequently said he had found other security bugs in Java that continued to make computers vulnerable to attack.
Java suffered another setback in October when Apple began removing old versions of the software from Internet browsers of Mac computers when its customers installed new versions of its OS X operating system. Apple did not provide a reason for the change and both companies declined comment at the time.

Coronado, California 1/8/13

Today I drove over the bridge from San Diego to Coronado Island.  This isn't the exact view I had but you can see that this is a beautiful place to visit or live.

When Bill Clinton was president of the United States he used to stay in a house very close to the Hotel Del Coronado a famous older hotel with a rich history in Southern California.
Coronado has a lot of small shops and restaurants  to choose from and has a theatre in the middle of town that is currently showing Les Miserable

I ran down the beach from the front of the Hotel Del and ran north up the shoreline.  This is one of my favorite beaches because you have people from all over the world and it is a quiet uncrowded beach most of the time except on the weekend.

This is a great place for couples, families with kids or someone looking to explore and walk around the beautifully groomed yards and amazing houses displaying all types of architecture.
